The true story of Leo Frank is familiar to most: A young Jewish American man is prosecuted for a murder he did not commit.
After an extensive, yet blemished trial heavily influenced by unfairness, prejudice, media sensation, corruption, and misinformation, Leo Frank is detained, and eventually lynched. This regrettable true event shaped the establishment of Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization, and on the opposite end, the Ku Klux Klan.
Even though the tale is heart-wrenching and sometimes shocking, ‘Parade’ is the very definition of art, delving into complex human emotions while being filled with hope, and is guaranteed to leave you contemplating it long after the curtain falls.
Not only does it shed light on the ills of society, but also reminds of the power of art to confront, illuminate, and reflect. No audience member has ever left ‘Parade’ unchanged and unmoved, goes to bed without thinking about the relevance of this tale, and nonchalant about what they have just witnessed.
When Alfred Uhry’s magnificent book, Jason Robert Brown’s exceptional music and lyrics, and Michael Arden’s direction came together in a gorgeous hotpot of true art, the remarkably layered, emotional, and passionate ‘Parade’ was born. Anybody and everybody that have experienced ‘Parade’ live on stage are in agreement - ‘Parade’ is eerily timeless, bleeds social commentary, yet exerts nothing but power, passion, and purpose.
If there were any doubts, let the proof be on the accolade shelf. To date ‘Parade’ has racked up no less than four Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, among plenty of nominations.
From the hair-raising relevance of the themes ‘Parade’ touches on to the magnificent score moving from profound to showstopper in the blink of an eye; from the visually striking imagery to the passion and precision and jaw-dropping performances by the stellar cast; from the captivating story; to the bits of razzle dazzle that adds to the experience as a whole - ‘Parade’ is marching on, and long after the theatre lights have dimmed and the doors closed, you’ll think about just how outstanding it was.
