“An exceedingly fun and electrifyingly staged tale of the rise and fall of The Four Seasons, which smartly uses their hit-songs as a sort of background soundtrack to the story.” – BroadwayWorld

They’re a treasure trove jam-packed with some of the world’s most iconic hits – from Oh What a Night and You’re the Apple of My Eye to My Mother’s Eyes and I’m in the Mood for Love, from Sherry and Big Girls Don’t Cry to Walk Like a Man and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You; they’re a group of blue-collar boys that went from humble beginnings to the very top; they’re Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees – they are legends; and when a musical that tells their true story goes on its 20th Anniversary tour across North America, it’s worth celebrating!

That’s right, Chicago – with the gritty true story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons comes not only all those instantly recognizable hits that you love so much, but a production that has cemented itself as one of the best jukebox musicals of all time and took Broadway by storm – and this season it is your turn to experience it! We’ve been lucky enough to have seen this one before, and we’ll definitely be going again this season – because Jersey Boys is coming to the CIBC Theatre

SYNOPSIS

“Don’t listen to those guys. I’ll tell you what happened.”

The words of Tommy DeVito – one of four blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey that became one of the biggest pop sensations of all time… and when he speaks up, you can listen.

Jersey Boys follows the true story of the rise and fall of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in a unique structure, with each band member representing a season, telling the story from their own perspective.

Spring, narrated by Tommy DeVito, tells the gritty backstory set in the 1950s Belleville streets of New Jersey, where he meets various musicians, have multiple run-ins with the law, and battles to pick a band name, until he meets teenager Frankie Castellucio with his unique falsetto voice – and a mob boss who decides to act as a mentor for the boys. Summer, as narrated by Bob Gaudio, follows his addition to the group – a songwriter they desperately needed. Hits such as Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, and Beggin’ see the light, and the group catapults into international fame. Fall is narrated by Nick Massi, sharing about the peak of The Four Seasons’ career, when tensions start to rise, and pressures cause cracks in their group, especially after news of massive debt comes to light.  With Winter, Frankie Valli steps into the light as the band completely dismantles. Despite massive personal tragedy, the tale builds towards the 1990 reunion of The Four Seasons for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jersey Boys is a refreshing blend of gritty biopic-like storytelling with the timeless music of The Four Seasons perfectly framing the production – an experience that will have you say “oh what a night!”

“A compelling rush of events that pauses only occasionally to savour the beauty of the songs.” – Newark Star-Ledger

CREATIVE TEAM

It’s already a story for the ages – a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks that creates something the world has never heard before, but to bring this incredible tale to life with true Broadway-greatness takes an incomparable visionary creative team.

With Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice’s magnificently written book, Bob Gaudio’s timeless music and Bob Crewe’s stunning lyrics at the core, award-winning director Des McAnuff (The Who’s Tommy, Big River, Billy Crystal: 700 Sundays, Jesus Christ Superstar, Ain’t Too Proud: The Donna Summer Musical) has created an unparalleled theatrical experience that oozes with gritty storytelling, sharp pacing, and an honest look into the sacrifices, heartbreak and dark undertones that formed The Four Seasons’ journey from rags to riches.

The world-renowned creative team also includes the talents of choreographer Sergio Trujillo, associate director Danny Austin, scenic designer Klara Zieglerova, costume designer Jess Goldstein, lighting designer Howell Binkley, sound designer Steve Canyon Kennedy, projection designer Michael Clark, musical supervisor Ron Melrose, orchestrator Steve Orich, and associate musical supervisor Ed Bussey.

“Bob Gaudio’s music, as sung by a dynamic cast and shaped by exemplary audio design, sounds as good as it ever did (and sometimes – blasphemy! – even better).” – Time Out New York

CAST

When one thinks about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, those iconic harmonizations, dynamic live vocal arrangements, soaring and distinctive falsettos, catchy tunes, and chemistry come to mind. This alone is extremely challenging to replicate – yet, not only faithfully recreating that iconic sound that sent the world reeling, but fully embodying Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Frankie Valli – the cast of the 20th anniversary touring production of Jersey Boys nails every bit of it.

Audiences can look forward to experience the talents of Luke Baker as Frankie Valli, Carlo Boumouglbay as Tommy DeVito, Lewis Kennedy as Nick Massi, Toby Miles as Bob Gaudio, Aiden Carson as Joey Pesci, Artemis Chrisoulakis as Francine, Sydnie Hocknell as Mary Delgado, Michael Levi as Bob Crewe, Olivia Mitchell as Lorraine, Jarryd Nurden as Hank Majewski, Oliver Tester as Norm Waxman, Damien Winchester as Barry Belson, and Fed Zanni as Gyp Decarlo, among others.

“When it sings and moves, this musical biography of pop icons Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, really rocks.” – AP

HISTORY & LEGACY

In the early 2000s original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio was inspired to create a musical production using the music of The Four Seasons, and then, with the support of Frankie Valli, decided to tap into their own magnificent tale. Book writers Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman came on board, and soon, what would become one of the world’s best jukebox musicals, was created.

Jersey Boys premiered in October 2004 at the La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego, and made its debut on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in November 2005, where it was met with rave reviews. The production finally closed in 2017, with 4,642 performances under the belt. Upon closing, Jersey Boys became the 12th longest-running production on Broadway.

Since then, Jersey Boys has been performed over 18,000 times around the world, racking up plenty of accolades, including four Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Laurence Olivier Award.

THE CIBC THEATRE

Boasting a history that goes back even further than The Four Seasons and a reputation that soars higher than the iconic falsetto voices, the CIBC Theatre located on 18 West Monroe Street in the Loop area, is one of the nation’s finest live entertainment venues – and has been for well over a century.

The CIBC Theatre opened in 1906 as the Majestic Theatre, primarily hosting vaudeville acts. During the years, and through a few name changes, the CIBC Theatre has become renowned for hosting touring Broadway productions, such as Kinky Boots, The Book of Mormon, Hamilton, The Goodbye Girl, and Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Architects Edmund R. Krause and brothers George and Cornelius Rapp have designed a stunning live entertainment venue with an ornate Beaux-Arts design in cream and off-white terra-cotta, complemented by Neo-Baroque stucco details. The lavish interior features cascading tiers, red velvet, and gold leaf, with venue’s original mosaic flooring and marble in the lobby, and in the auditorium, glorious deep reds and elegant gold across the orchestra floor, dress circle, mezzanine, box seats, and balcony.

To add to the grandeur of the CIBC Theatre, you can expect top-tier sound and lighting, impeccable sight-lines and pin-drop acoustics, while the modern amenities – including candy and drink bars, easily accessible seating and elevators, a merchandise stand, private suite service, closed-circuit hearing aids, and ample safe parking – cater for every want and need.
