This spring, Hamilton will be running in CIBC Theatre, the highest rated entertainment venue of Chicago and the best possible venue for the global phenomenon show. The acclaimed and multi-award winning show travels to you to tell its incredible story from city to city all over the Country.
Getting its start off Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was not instantly the Broadway hit that you will see now. Lin-Manuel Miranda has spoken candidly about its beginnings, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda saying that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That singular performance gained praise and a well-deserved standing ovation from his crowd at the time, including former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and ultimately led to Miranda’s creation of the Hamilton musical we know now.
Because of his history in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also gained inspiration from other popular theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which follows a similar theme that tells the story of a struggle, and triumphing that struggle, as opposed to the traditional musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very positive and happy. Hamilton is no different, being about the difficulties arising as an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who rose to power and became the first American Treasury Secretary. With the utmost respect to its source material, the Musical shows us both sides of Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only offering us a look into his personal life and struggle, but also his impact and lasting legacy in being able to greatly shape the Country during its time period.
By telling this story, the Musical continues to present its timelessness in popular culture and even international public discourse, confronting themes and issues that are very relevant not only to North America, but also globally. Even the use of musical genres like hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the productions score has cemented its place in modern culture, making it one of the most relevant hit Chicago musicals today.
