It’s undeniable: ‘Parade’ hit the musical world with a force, combining modern musical genres with Jason Robert Brown’s high-powered lyrics, a wonderful book, impressive vocal abilities, and a moving story that can turn even the hardest of hearts soft.
When the award-winning Alfred Uhry, who has a personal connection to the tale at the heart of the musical, and composer Jason Robert Brown was approached by co-conceiver Harold Prince to bring the harrowing true story of Leo Frank to life on stage, nobody could have possibly foreseen the immense successes that the production was destined for.
Following ‘Parade’s tremendous triumphs of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, earning ‘Parade’ two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that racked up seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway resurrection that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to the production’s lengthy award-list, the exceptional production that took the musical world by storm is finally hitting the road to bring the gripping musical to eager audiences across North America.
Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown’s masterpiece is based on the flawed 1913 court case and incarceration of Jewish factory manager and newly-wed Leo Frank, for the alleged murder of a 13-year old girl. While his initial death penalty was reduced to life in prison, the massive media provokation and surrounds of fanaticism, prejudice, corruption, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s kidnapping and eventual lynching.
Even though ‘Parade’is extraordinarily heartrending, intriguing, and sometimes even distressing, it is also filled with conviction, love, and devotion. From the haunting relevance of it and captivating performances by the stellar cast to the magnificent original music, from the wonderful ensemble to Jason Robert Brown’s stark reminders of how history repeats itself encapsulated within his powerful lyrics, from the relevant true story to the vivid imagery with just enough deft flourishes to ensnare, from the unraveling of complex human emotions to the fierce love between two people in the face of adversity, ‘Parade’ is destined for triumph - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.
Incredibly moving, ‘Parade’ will change you - and what more could one possibly want from experiencing a true work of art on stage?. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
