‘Parade’ is, matter-of-factly, one of the best, most revered and compelling productions to hit stages this summer.
When the award-winning Alfred Uhry, who has a personal connection to the tale at the core of the musical, and three-time Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown was approached by internationally acclaimed Harold Prince to bring the unnerving true story of Leo Frank to life on stage, nobody could have possibly anticipated the mammoth successes that the production was destined for.
Following ‘Parade’s tremendous triumphs of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, scooping up two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that racked up seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway resurrection that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to the production’s already heavily loaded award-shelf, the exceptional production that took the musical world by storm is finally hitting the road to bring the gripping musical to eager audiences across the nation.
And the tale at the core of it all: the true story of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank who was falsely accused and convicted in 1913 for the rape and murder of a 13-year old factory worker. While his initial death penalty was reduced to life in prison, the hugely distorted media coverage and surrounds of fanaticism, blatant discrimination, misconduct, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s kidnapping and eventual murder.
Few productions can achieve what ‘Parade’ did: while itis extraordinarily heartrending, riveting, and sometimes even shocking, it is also filled with conviction, compassion, and devotion. From the unnerving pertinence and breathtaking performances by the incredibly talented cast to the compelling original music, from the wonderful ensemble to unparallelled and punchy lyrics, from the relevant true story to the vivid imagery with just enough flashiness to enthrall, from the elucidation of complex human emotions to the durable love between two people in the face of adversity, ‘Parade’ is destined for greatness - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.
Incredibly moving, ‘Parade’ will change you - and what more could one possibly want from experiencing a true work of art on stage?. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
