‘Parade’ is simply one of the finest, most adored and relevant productions to hit stages this summer.
The lamentable true story that saddened, and at the same time, inspired many around the globe, also became Jason Robert Brown’s debut as composer and yet another masterpiece by Alfred Uhry, who has a personal connection to the tale. This poignant tale, however, ended up becoming something nobody could have anticipated: the almost incomprehensible heights ‘Parade’ would reach.
After the massive triumphs of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, earning ‘Parade’ two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that received seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway resurrection that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to ’Parade’’s already heavily loaded award-shelf, the musical sensation is finally hitting the road to bring the gloriously hopeful musical to audiences across the nation.
Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown’s tour de force is based on the flawed 1913 court case and imprisonment of Jewish factory manager and newly-wed Leo Frank, for the alleged murder of a 13-year old girl. While his initial death sentence was reduced to life imprisonment, the massive media sensationalization and surrounds of fanaticism, blatant discrimination, corruption, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s kidnapping and eventual murder.
Few productions can achieve what ‘Parade’ did: while itis exceptionally heartrending, gripping, and sometimes even distressing, it is also filled with conviction, love, and faithfulness. From the haunting relevance of it and layered, passionate performances by the stellar cast to the superb original music, from the wonderful ensemble to Jason Robert Brown’s stark reminders of how history repeats itself encapsulated within his powerful lyrics, from the harrowing true story to the high-powered imagery with just enough deft flourishes to enthrall, from the unraveling of complex human emotions to the fearless love between two people in the face of adversity, ‘Parade’ is destined for triumph - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.
Incredibly moving, ‘Parade’ will change you - and what more could one possibly want from experiencing a true work of art on stage?. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
