History of Famous Shows at the CIBC Theatre
Back in the day, it was known as the Majestic Theatre, and it played a pivotal role as the hub for famous vaudeville acts. This was a time when live entertainment was at its peak, and the Majestic Theatre was at the forefront of this cultural phenomenon. In fact, it contributed to Chicago’s rise as one of the nation’s most prominent centers for vaudeville entertainment, second only to New York.
One of the most legendary figures to grace the stage at the CIBC Theatre was the renowned magician Harry Houdini. You may recall him as “The Justly World-Famous Self-Liberator,” and he left an indelible mark during his performances here. One of his most memorable acts involved a daring escape from the “Water Torture Cell” while defying gravity by standing on his head.
It was a show for the books, and one can only imagine the wonder and excitement it must have generated among the audience. Sadly, the era was before the popularity of video cameras, so we can only imagine what a spectacle it must have been. For now, the closest you can get to the late magician is by entering a theatre he once called home.
